Acute shortage of drinking water in Chennai

Posted on: 08/Oct/2016 12:05:44 PM
There is no stock of water from the water reservoirs in Chennai and also the Krishna water from Andhra will come only after 3 months. In view of this, there will be acute shortage of drinking water in Chennai.

Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board wholly depend on Krishna River water and north east monsoon for drinking water. Krishna water from Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh will reach Tamil Nadu

According to Telugu Ganga agreement, 8 TMC Krishna water has to be given to Tamil Nadu from 1st July to 31st October and again 4 TMC water should be given from months of January to April.

Last year the Andhra Pradesh government did not release the water saying there was no monsoon rains. Last year due to heavy floods, the reservoirs in Chennai and Tiruvallur were filled to the brim. 30 TMC of water was wasted and was sent to sea. Since there was enough water, the water supply was not disrupted in spite of the dearth of Krishna water.

Now the water storage in reservoirs are coming down and the Andhra government has not supplied Krishna river water as per agreement. In view of the foregoing there may be acute shortage of water in Chennai and its suburbs.
