North West monsoon rains are to commence shortly in Tamil Nadu. In view of this, the local body elections are likely to be postponed. The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission decided to hold the Tamil Nadu local body elections on 17th and 19th of October. 4.97 lakhs people ad filed their nominations to contest in these elections.

The Madras High Court cancelled the conduct of elections to local bodies in the state citing irregularities in the poll notification. The court also directed the state government to issue a fresh notification and hold the elections by December.

At this juncture, the Meteorological Centre has forecasted that the north east monsoon rains will commence from 20th. Hence the elections cannot be conducted during this period.

An official of State Election Commission said: The Election Commissielon decided to conduct the local body elections before the monsoon but that has been cancelled. Now the elections should be conducted during the monsoon rain season. This is very difficult. Hence the election commission is likely to postpone the elections.
