Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has ordered the setting up of a veterinary college and research centre in Nerkalanjiyam in Thanjavur.

In a press statement issued said, the Chief Minister said that the college is to be built at a cost of Rs 85.12 crore on an area of 100.57 acres. A sum of Rs. 16.34 crore has already been allocated this year and 40 students would be enrolled in this college later next year.

Nerkalanjiyam is said to be a place with more number of domestic animals and this is the reason behind this venture. Presently, there are two veterinary colleges functioning in the State, but the required number of veterinary doctors was not fulfilled.

The college, coming up in Orathanadu, would not only be useful to developmental veterinary activities at Thanjai Delta area, but also in providing latest treatment techniques for the animals. It would produce medical graduates suitable for rural areas and be helpful for financial growth of  these areas.
