Digital distractions like talking over phone largely impact the sleeping time of teens. They get shorter sleeping time and greater daytime, according to what a Canadian research reveals.

As compared to previous generations, adolescents of this generation sleep lesser, and their sleep quality is poor too. They also report of increased sleepiness during the day time which altogether will contribute to health and social consequences, says Jennifer O’Loughlin, author of the research paper in journal Sleep Health and researcher at the University of Montreal.

A large part of teen’s life is occupied by the electronic media as well, especially during the time before they go to bed, the researchers explain.

Identifying the link between time spent on video games, TVs and phones and level of sleep teens get, the data from Montreal based study made on high school students was analyzed.

Between 2008 and 2009, over 1200 students of the age group 14 to 16 completed the questionnaire. Their usage of electronics, TV watching habits, frequency of getting indulged in sedentary activities like reading, working on homework, talking over phone, etc were inquired. And the results of the research states that kids who got engaged in computers and video games for over two hours a day had lesser sleep by 17 to 11 minutes as compared to teens who used screens for lesser time period.
