Every year the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple will be opened for mandala pooja and makaravilakku pilgrimage season for 60 days from 1st of Karthigai month. Ayyappa devotes will start the fasting from 1st Karthigai. After observing the 41-day vritham the devotees are allowed to carry it and without the irumudi, the devotee cannot climb the pathinettaam padi at the Sannidhanam.
The Lord Ayyappa shrine at Sabarimala will reopen for the two-month-long Mandala-Makaravilakku festival on Tuesday. The 42-day mandala festival would come to end on December 26 with the Mandala pooja. After a three-day recess, the temple would reopen on December 30 for Makaravilakku festival. The `Makaravilakku` falls on January 14.
The temple would be closed on January 20 morning, bringing an end to the two-month pilgrimage season.
