In a major step to check black money, the government on 8th discontinued Rs 500 and 1000 currency notes. The announcement in this regard was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to the nation.
In order to exchange the void notes people started rushing to banks and ATMs. The same plight continues even now.
At this juncture, the Reserve Bank Of India located at Rajaji Salai started dispensing cash from 10th. On 10th, 1900 people collected their cash. Similarly on 11th and 12th, 2200 people and 1100 people collected cash respectively. On 13th, 2200 people received cash.
They were given 100 rupee notes changes upto 4000 rupees in lieu of the old 500 and 1000 notes.
After a review by Finance ministry, the limit of old and now defunct Rs 500 and Rs 1000 rupee notes that can be exchanged for freshly minted Rs 2000 and new Rs 500 notes was increased from Rs 4000 to Rs 4500 per day.
Till yesterday afternoon, nearly 3500 people have exchanged the money. In the last five days, nearly 13000 people have exchanged Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes at the RBI.
