Chennai and other places in Tamil Nadu to get rains sometime around Dec 1st week

Posted on: 24/Nov/2016 11:57:23 AM
This is period when i normally put update on rains, sadly this year the update has been on the cold nights. The north interior Tamil Nadu particularly the Krishnagiri, Vellore and Dharmapuri districts and also in some places at Salem, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai, Theni etc.

How long the cold nights will continue ?

This is expected to continue till 30th November, 2016. Once some rains are back, the night temperature will gradually rise as the radiation escaping atmosphere gets trapped leading to little warm nights.

Will it rain in this monsoon ?

Some people tell me that, dew and cold nights are seen so we can say monsoon is over and there will not be any further rains. We waited for MJO to be back and it came back but still its not raining. One of the Kea blogger expert Selvan said that the active phase of MJO is being surpressed by the -ve IOD conditions. I feel something is not right and the models struggle in picking up rains. One run, it shows rains and next day its removing it. But overall, there is good consensus that December is going to be good for Tamil Nadu. Remember this is lanina like conditions which are prevailing with -ve IOD. Most of the previous years lets say 2011, we had Cyclone Thane at around December 30, 2011 and in 2013, the monsoon spilled over into January and we had a Depression hitting TN around January 5,2014. So this year too an extended monsoon can be expected.

When is the next rains for Chennai and TN ?

The november 27/28th rains stands cancelled. The next rains will be around the 1st week of December. The October and November put together is going to end as one of the lowest in last 200 years for Chennai. But the monsoon is not over. I have some hope. We cant make up for the loss of October and November put together, but there will be something to cheer for sure.Till then enjoy the cold nights.
