One of the prominent decisions you make in bringing up your child is deciding the school in which you can enroll your child. Getting is right will undoubtedly put your kid in the ‘right’ learning process for the entire lifetime. Here are few quick tips on how to choose the right school
Student-teacher relationship is the key
Even more than the curriculum, the relationship between students and teachers is of prime importance. Imagine a 3 year child who is loved by all the relatives and parents at home. When he or she steps in to the school, there gets a huge void created between the child and family members.
While choosing the school, make it a point to interact with the class teacher in person. Note that the teacher should be equipped to know the strengths and weakness of the background, interest, emotions, and achievements of each and every student. The teacher should take the pride of students’ progress and make necessary improvement as often as required.
Surround with words
During the formative years of a child, make sure to surround your child with words, more words and literally more words. The class should keep visiting the library very often. The teacher should engage children reading a lot of instructions and storytelling.
Giving them building blocks is also a fair way to engage kids. Also, give them good focus on syllabication of words.
Introduce math
First of all, understand that there is no specific time for your child to start learning math. Start introducing math concepts right during the first few days of school. In fact, a few math skills are innate in kids and can be measured soon after birth. Hence, discussing basic concepts with students during preschool days is recommended. Number of objects, which one is smaller or bigger, which is greater, and a few other questions can be raised to children.
Show no keen focus on test scores
At times, a good score on the report card of children is an indication of good job by the school and there is nothing to do with the skill level of child. There is nothing to feel excited about the test scores going up in a year. These tests hardly test one third of what is taught in the curriculum.
No use of school days without recess
There are a few elementary schools that run without even playgrounds or play areas. There should be at least a break of twenty minutes a day. This gives both physical and mental benefits to the children. Kids certainly need downtime, breaking their rigor.
Teachers are of better importance
When the teacher is a superhero, it is possible to speed up the process of learning in children. They can also alleviate poverty in students. There should be mentors, instructions and discussions of best practices. Also, the school should not interchange teachers from one class to the other.
Make it a point to ensure these before enrolling your child in the school.
