Dhirubhai Ambani is the founder of Reliance Industries in Bombay. He, along with his cousin, founded the firm. He holds the pride of being listed among the top 50 businessmen in Asia in the Sunday Times.
Reliance Industries was made public in 1977. By the year 2007, the company was made public and the total fortune of the family was $60 billion which made the Ambanis the third richest family in the world.
In the ongoing year, 2016, he was honored with Padma Vibhushan award which is the second highest civilian honor towards his contributions made in Trade. It was in 1966 that he founded Reliance Industries and as of 2012, over 85,000 employees were with the giant firm providing over 5 percent of total central government’s tax revenue.
In 2012, the company got listed among the top ten Fortune 500 companies in terms of revenue.
In partnership with Champaklal Damani, his second cousin, Dhirubhai Ambani had started the firm Majin after returning from Yemen to India. To note, Champaklala had been living with Ambani in Turkey. The company was involved in importing polyester yarn and exported spices to Yemen. The very first Reliance Commercial Corporation office was set up at Narsinatha Street, Masjid Bundur. There was a telephone connection, a table and three chairs at the office that was of about 350 sq ft. Ambani and his family had been staying in a 2 bedroom apartment at Jai Hind Estate in Bhuleshwar. In the year 1965, the partnership came to an end and Ambani started being on his own due to differences in temperaments and the way in which the two looked at conducting business.
