As the first phase, digitalization of radio communication among policemen is set to get digitalized in Chennai and Trichy cities.

Hinting about this, the police officials state that digital based police radio system APCO-P25 will soon be launched. This will allow rapid, undisturbed and secured communication. This technology is in use in developed nations like the US. This system will be launched considering the growth and developments expected in the police department in the following decade.

As the first phase to begin with the scheme, it will be launched in Chennai and Trichy. In areas including Vandalur, Pallavaram, Maduravoil, Aavadi, Manali, etc, telecommunication towers are to be launched, and 30 Repeaters will be used to transmit signals over 12 sq.km. areas.

Once the system gets into user, there will be a complete replacement of all wireless radios used by policemen and those used at police station at Chennai and Trichy.

New devices including LED display, digital sound emergency calling buttons, etc will come into use.

Drawbacks with the existing system
In the system currently in use, when a communication is passed at one end, it will be audible and reach all the users in the same communication line. Eliminating this, the new system will restrict the communication between two policemen or a group of policemen within as per the need or choice. The voice will be heard crystal clear and safe and secured. This system is being launched at a cost of Rs 90 crore in Chennai and Trichy. On completion, it will be introduced in other districts as well.
