There will be a big congregation of people at the Marina Beach on the occasion of Kaanum Pongal. On the evening of Kaanum Pongal there will a heavy rush in the beach, similarly there will be crowd in Besant Nagar beach, Elliots Beach, Guindy Park and all entertainment parks.
Keeping this in mind, 15000 police personnel have been pressed in to service throughout the Chennai city. Special security arrangements have been made in Marina beach. Apart from a police control room on the beach front, police assistance booths, ambulances with a medical team would be kept in readiness to handle any emergency. The police have also installed six watch towers on the beach.This special security arrangements are being done under the orders of the Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner George.
Police personnel would be manning the entire stretch of Kamarajar Salai on the Marina beach where a large number of people are expected to visit the MGR memorial, Anna Samadhi and former Chief Minster Jayalalithaa’s memorial.
Police sources said bathing in the sea would be banned. However, a team of fishermen drawn from the surrounding areas and a team of 100 trained swimmers would also be kept in readiness as lifeguards to handle any emergency.
The entire police force has been mobilized to maintain strict vigil at Tiruvottiyur, Marina, Elliots and Neelankarai beaches which the public are expected to throng.
Children`s Park at Guindy, Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur and amusement parks, All India Industrial Trade Fair at Island Grounds and shopping malls would be the preferred destinations for the public. Tight security would be provided in all these places,
