While larger quantities of turmeric and sugarcane have arrived in Chennai on the occasion of Pongal festival season, the traders inform that the sales is rather down due to the demonetization effect.
Sugarcane has been transported in over 100 lorries from Cuddalore, Salem, and Madurai districts and arrived at the Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market..
A bunch of 15 sugarcanes is being sold at Rs. 200 to Rs. 250. The bunch of 20 sugarcane is sold at Rs. 250 to Rs. 300.
Also, a large quantity of sugarcane is being transported from Dandalacheri and neighbourhood near Gummidipoondi in Thriuvallur district. The traders informed the harvest of turmeric was affected by the cyclone Varda. A bunch of 5 turmeric is being sold at Rs 30 to Rs. 50.
Generally, around 150 trucks of vegetable reach Koyambedu daily on regular days. The vice president of the vegetable traders association, Sukumar, informed that the number of trucks has come down due to the demonetization.
While the number of trucks carrying vegetables reaching Chennai has reduced, he also informed that the rush of people buying has also come down and also that sales of sugarcane is also not as per expectations.
