Information is gathered that the taxes on certain items like fast food and sweetened bottled drinks are likely to go up after the new budget.

As there is a substantial increase in the number of persons suffering from obesity, diabetes, and heart-related diseases, it seems that the central government has decided to increase the taxes (Fat Tax) on fat-rich food such as fast-food items and sweetened cool drinks.

Information is gathered that this decision is taken as the result of the recommendations of the secretaries of the central departments of health and human welfare.

Further, the introduction of this proposed Fat Tax on these items has been recommended after the budget-related meeting by the 11-member committee on health headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

World Safety and Pollution Control Board has also already recommended this issue to the central government.

The statistics reveal that every year, around 5.8 million persons lose their lives due to heart and lungs related diseases, cancer, and diabetes caused by the fast food items.

It has also been established that during the year 2015, 69.1 million persons died due to diabetes in India.
