Voter IDs issued to new voters on National Voters Day

On the occasion of the National Voters Day, Chennai Corporation has started distributing colour voters ID cards to new voters from yesterday.  
 
The National Voters` Day which was instituted in 2011 by the Election Commission of India with the aim of ensuring universal adult franchise, increasing the enrolment of voters and encouraging participation of newly eligible young voters. Every year the National Voters Day is observed on 25th January.
 
At this juncture, the 7th National Voters Day was celebrated on behalf of Chennai Corporation at the Ripon Buildings. Chennai collector and Additional District Electoral Officer B Maheswari read the National Voters Day pledge. All the participants accepted the pledge.
 
After this, the distribution of new colour voters ID cards was launched. As on 01-01-2017, 82, 666 new voters of the 16 constituencies of Chennai District were included in the voters list.
 
Chennai collector B Maheswari and Deputy Commissioner (Works) K S Kandasamy distributed the new colour voter IDs to the new voters.
 
Fathima Ihshana who is a college student is now eligible to vote. She said: I am very happy because I am aged 18 years and am eligible to vote. I am proud that I can vote for the ruler who is going to rule us.
 
District Electorate officer and Assistant Commissioner (Revenue) V Anbuselvan, Assistant Commissioner (Education) M Govind Rao and District Revenue Officer (Election) K Ramesh participated in the function.
 
People who have enrolled for the first time in the 285 E Service Centres of Chennai District can collect their Electors Voter Identity Cards by showing the message in their mobile phones sent by Election Commission.
