Hampi Express accident :14 dead, 30 injured

At least fourteen persons were killed and around 30 injured when Bangalore-bound Hampi Express collided with a stationary goods train at Penneconda station of Andhra Pradesh`s Anantapur district on Tuesday morning.

The accident took place around 3.00 a.m. when the Hubli-Bangalore Hampi Express hit the stationary goods train at Penukonda railway station, about 400 km from here.

More than 70 others were injured. The death toll may go up as some of the injured are stated to be in very critical condition.

Some passengers were still trapped inside the damaged bogies and the rescue workers were using gas cutters to rescue them.

Railway Minister Mukul Roy, who was in Kolkata, rushed to the site of the accident and ordered an inquiry into it. Roy also announced a compensation of Rs five lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs one lakh for those who sustained grievous injuries and Rs 50,000 to those who received minor injuries. The injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals.
