The budget session of the parliament is set to start tomorrow (Tuesday, 30th January). The budget will be presented on 1st February.

Generally, the trend was that the budget presentation session would commence during the last week of February. And the presentation of the budget was done on the last day of February (28th).

Claiming that this trend was set by the British, the present central government of the NDA (National Democratic  Alliance) led by the BJP has changed the date of budget presentation to 31st January.

So, this year, the budget session is scheduled to start by end January and the budget to be presented on 1st February.

As per this, the budget session commences tomorrow. As this is the 1st parliamentary session for this year 2017, the President will address both the houses together (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha). For the first time, the separate Railway budget has been canceled and will now be jointly presented along with the General Budget.

With elections scheduled to be conducted in the 5 states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur, the opposition parties are of the strong opinion that the early presentation of the budget has been scheduled as various concessions for the states may be proposed.

So, the opposition parties together demanded that the budget session is postponed till the completion of the counting of votes in the election of 5 states. Following this, the Election Commission has emphasized the central government that no special concessions should be announced for the states where elections are scheduled.

As the ruling party is also apprehensive that the opposition parties may convey their viewpoints to the 5 states through the parliamentary sessions. So, intense contentions are to be encountered from both the sides – the ruling alliance as well as the opposition parties.

The central government has planned to implement the GST (Goods Services Tax) from 1st July.
