Additional sheets have been inserted in 1.75 Crores ration cards. The validity of the ration cards in Tamil Nadu was over in 2009. After this additional sheets were inserted and the validity was extended. Similarly this year also, insertion of additional sheets took place in the ration shops from 2nd January. So far additional sheets were inserted in 1.75 Crores cards.
An official of the Food Department said: The ration cards eligible for rice and sugar and the ration cards for the police department are being renewed in the ration shops. Ration cards that are not eligible for any purchase can be renewed on online. 1.93 Crores ration cards including cards which are not eligible for any commodities have been registered in POS machines installed in the ration shops. In this only 1.75 cards have been renewed. The renewal sheet will be eligible till the month of December. Some are reluctant to renew their cards. Smart cards will be issued from the month of April.
