Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam has announced that the compensation to be paid to the farmers due to the prevailing drought conditions will be directly credited at the same time to their savings bank accounts.
As the Northeast monsoon failed totally in most parts of Tamil Nadu, all the districts have been announced to be hit by drought conditions. An order has been passed to immediately waive the Land Tax payments due from the farmers.
The State Disaster Relief Fund has been expended on the relief activities for the cyclone Varda. So, the funds required for the drought relief have been taken from the National Disaster relief Funds.The central government has modified the procedure for getting drought relief funds. Accordingly, only after the field inspection carried out, the state of Tamil Nadu has been declared drought-affected.
Consequently, an appeal was made for the drought relief and sent to the central government. The Tamil Nadu State Government has asked for a relief of Rs. 39565 Crores. The central government appointed committee has completed the study and analysis of this appeal. The Chief Minister informed that he expects drought relief funds will be released once this report is submitted.
At the same time, the details of the Surveyed Land registration number and the details of the crops of the farmers, and the savings bank accounts are being sought and collected. This activity will be completed quickly and the drought relief funds for the farmers will be credited to their respective savings bank accounts at the same time.
The Chief Minister assured that the state government would continue to take prompt relief action in case of any disasters in future is faced by the farmers.
