On Tuesday, Surveillance aircraft Netra developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) was officially inducted in IAF.

The Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS), a laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) developed Netra after many years of hard work. This Netra which is an Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&CS) was inducted in IAF during the first day of Aero India-2017 exhibition at Bangalore.

Netra was designed and manufactured by the team headed by Rajlaxmi who has been working with the DRDO for the last 28 years. Netra has the capability to detect hostile missiles and jets at land, sea and air within the range of 200 kms. It is mounted on a Brazilian Embraer-145 jet.

DRDO chairman S Christopher said: Netra surveillance plane has much more capabilities than what Pakistan currently has, it is also relatively cheaper.

Women scientist J Manjula heads the Airborne Early Warning and Control System centre. There are many women scientists including Rajlaxmi, Manisha Sharma and Bhagyalaxmi working under J Manjula.

Air Force chief B S Dhanoa has mentioned that Netra plane has been designed and manufactured by women scientists. Only in DRDO we can see the women heading the projects in large numbers.
