Each and every doctor practicing in India will be assigned with a unique identification number, says Dr. Jayshree Mehta, the President of Medical Council of India.
Only with this move will we be able to jot down the total number of doctors in India. It is also possible to keep track of them when they migrate between states, she added while addressing the 22nd National Conference of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology, BRONCOCON 2017 yesterday. The conference was organized by Christian Medical College at Vellore.
There were totally 22 medical colleges when MCI was launched and now, the count has raised to 460, she pointed. When MCI was set up, 500 doctors passed out annually and now, there are 63,958 doctors passing out. By introducing unique identification number, we can easily identify doctors and the system is easy to be implemented because all doctors’ records are with us.
A Digital Mission Mode Project is kick-started by the MCI. Under this, it will be easy to monitor all medical college faculties.
By April this year, the system will be launched in about a hundred colleges. Those colleges that do not implement the system or fail to continue implementing on and on will be penalized.
