Price of fruits and veggies likely to increase with surge in VAT

The state government has raised VAT for petrol and diesel in Tamil Nadu. This hike in price is likely to reflect on vegetables and fruits rate. Loads of vegetables and fruits are brought to the vegetable markets in the state through container trucks from other states. From these large markets, the loads are split to different other smaller markets. From here, it is then transported to other smaller shops through roadways transport.

As VAT for petrol and diesel is now increased, a 20 percent hike in price of fruits is likely. As per the status in Koyambedu market now, a kg of tomato is sold for Rs 22 and this will probably increase up to Rs 26 per kg owing to increase in VAT of petrol and diesel rates.

There was a similar sudden price hike of petrol and diesel by the Tamil Nadu government. From 27 percent, it was raised to 34 percent for petrol, and from 21.43 percent to 24 percent for diesel. Hence, petrol and diesel rates have raised by Rs 3.78 and Rs 1.76 respectively.
