State-run BSNL will replace all its 2G sites with new 3G ones and roll out 4G services at handpicked locations. For this, the Indian telecommunications company will set up over 28,000 new mobile base stations within 2017-18.

All the 2G base stations and old equipment are getting replaced with modern base stations to provide 3G and 4G services. These works under the phase 8 of BSNL’s expansion will set up 4G services at select stations. The phase 8 of the task is estimated to get over by financial year 2018, said Anupam Shrivastava, the Chairman and MD of BSNL.

Part of its 3G spectrum will be used for offering 4G services. Nokia and Ericsson and ZTE, the Chinese telecom equipment companies are in fray for this BSNL’s move. The lowest bidder is Nokia as L1 and ZTE is the second runner up. Their bids are being evaluated.

Vendors are to get finalized in April. The bid for equipment replacement in west and south zone will be handed over to the lowest bidder. The eastern and northern regions will be given to L2 bidder if it accepts rates the same as L1 rates, Shrivastava pointed.
