The project of setting up a 3rd railway terminal in Tambaram in Chennai Metro City has been completed.
It will be rendered for the public by the end of this month. The Railway officials are reviewing the possibility of operating 2 new trains.
Earlier, it had been decided to set up a 3rd railway terminus station in Chennai Metro City in addition to the Central and Egmore Railway Stations. Tambaram was selected as the venue for the citys 3rd Railway Terminus. The project activities commenced in 2013. Ii is now nearing completion. The 3rd railway terminus at Tambaram will soon be dedicated to service.
The newly constructed 3rd terminus boasts of modern amenities not seen in other major railway stations such as modern restaurant, shopping mall, and vehicle parking facility.
Some railway officials shared news regarding this 3rd terminus: It has been set up in Tambaram at a cost of Rs. 33.288 Crores. There has been a large increase currently in the number of express trains running from Egmore Railway Station.
So, some of the trains operating from Egmore will now be shifted to start from Tambaram terminus.
In particular, 12 trains to northern states start from Egmore terminus. There is some scope for 3 of these trains to Kacheguda, Kakinada, and Gaya can be shifted to start from Tambaram terminus. Depending on the demand for services, the number of trains from Tambaram will be increased.
There are currently 8 platforms. For the cleansing and maintenance of the trains, 3 workshops will be set up. The entrances to Tambaram station are being expanded.
As the double-track laying work up to Dindigul has been completed, reviews are being conducted to explore operation of 2 more trains to southern districts. Once the approval is obtained from the Ministry of Railways, the new trains will start operation.
