Following the Northeast Monsoon rainy season failure, the capacity of the major reservoirs in the Chennai have gone down to 13 percent.
In this drastic situation, MWSSB has been initiating servers activities at a cost of Rs. 60 Crores to meet the demand for water from the Chennai resident. The task of exploring new water resources is also in progress.
The drinking water for the Chennai which was earlier 85 Crore Litres per day, has now been reduced to 55 Crores Litres per day.
As sufficient pressure is not available in the low capacity at present, the facility of pipe/tap water has also been reduced.
In this situation, MWSSB has also undertaken the task of setting up plastic storage tanks in different places and distributing it to the public.
As the currently operating strength of 520 water tanker lorries os insufficient, MWSSB has decided to hire more water tanker lorries to meet the demand.
MWSSB officials explained that they have planned to hire an additional 100 water tanker lorries. Currently, 4200 trips are done every day. Now, we are planning to increase this to 6500 trips per day.
To store this drinking water supplied by the water tanker lorries, plastic storage tanks are set up in 10500 locations. There is a plan to set up an additional 660 plastic tanks. Currently, 90 plastic tanks have been set up. 950 plastic tanks, which are under repair, will be set right.
