Starting from June 1, devices using Aadhar authentication need to follow new encryption standards, according to UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) announcement.
With this, the hardware gets an extra layer of security at a time when they are set to turn into the centre stage for digital payments based on biometric.
In his note about this, Ajay Bhushan Pandey, the CEO of UIDAI said UIDAI has introduced new specifications. The manufacturers and vendors need to abide by STQC certifications, catering to the latest standards. He added that they have advised them to use devices based on the latest specifications and the old ones should also be upgraded to the latest norms.
The nodal body for Aadhar is UIDAI. Aadhar system is a 12 digit based unique identification number that functions based on biometrics. In India, 112 crore Aadhar are generated. Over 500 crore Aadhar authentications are done and 100 crore e-KYC are done too.
Furthermore, Pandey stressed the point that upgradation is required only to those who wish to make use of Aadhar authentication. Aadhar authentication can be done only using devices that incorporate these new specifications.
