Underground cables will soon be laid, Thangamani promises

The Minister of Electricity P. Thangamani announced in the assembly yesterday that all the overhead cables set up at areas newly included to Greater Chennai Corporation will be transformed into underground cables. This will be done at estimated cost of Rs 2,567 crore.
 
The Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin had sought attention in the issue where a woman got electrocuted in the Kolathur constituency. Addressing the issue raised, the minister said necessary measures will be taken wherever needed.
 
Thangamani said the mission to convert all overhead cables into underground ones will be done at Rs 2,567 crore. This will be done to cables in Kolathur and other areas that fall under Great Chennai Corporation.
 
These underground lines are already present in about 4,684 km stretch and the remaining areas will also be covered soon. The electricity department made an outstanding job at the time of cyclone Vardah, Thangamani lauded. In spite of the obliterating effects of the cyclone, the department had restored electricity supply in over 30 percent areas on the same day at 8 pm.
 
Setting the department against that of Visakhapatnam, he said the latter took 10 long days to restore electricity.
