As one of the initial measures to save electrical energy consumption, 25 solar lights are to be installed in Chennai metro railway stations.
An official from Chennai metro informed that the electricity consumption is quite high as used for operating the trains, air conditioners, lifts, escalators in stations, etc and hence the bills for electricity is also quite high.
In order to reduce this, there are plans to utilise solar energy. Solar panels are to be installed on the roofs of the metro railway stations and the power will be used. Activities for this plan have already commenced.
In the 1st phase, solar lights are to be installed in specific locations. A tender worth Rs.10 Lakhs has been floated to procure 25 solar lamps of 50 Watts capacity. The contract will be awarded to a selected company from this tender and solar lights will be installed and used.
