124 digital CCTV cameras to be installed in Railway stations

As a better safety measure for the passengers, 124 digital CCTV cameras have been installed for surveillance monitoring in Chennai Metro in several railway stations including Central, Egmore, and Tambaram.

Chennai Divisional Railway Manager explained that 822 Crores of passengers have travelled throughout the country in the year 2016-17. Rs. 47400 Crores have been earned from the railway fares.

The Chennai Railway division earned Rs. 1791.78 Crores through passengers in the financial year 2015-16. As compared to this, there has been an increase in the revenue in the financial year 2016-17 as the Division earned Rs. 1862.84 Crores. This constitutes a 3.97 percent increase.

However, the earnings through goods services were lesser mainly due to the impact of the cyclone Varda. The earnings from goods services were Rs. 1226.09 Crores in the financial year 2015-16. This has come down to Rs. 1067.22 Crores in the financial year 2016-17. The reduction is 12.96 percent.

The Chennai Railway division operated 2098 special trains during the financial year 2016-17.

Safety aspect

124 New digital CCTV cameras have been installed in many railway stations for surveillance monitoring as a part of improved safety measure. The details of the stations and the number of digital CCTV cameras: Chennai Central - 50, Egmore -28, Tambaram - 22, Basin Bridge and Moore market stations - 12 each.

Another point to note is that 151 CCTV cameras are already installed in these stations.

Status on various fronts

42 new CCTV cameras have been installed in Katpadi Railway Station. RPSF Companies are deployed for better protection of women passengers.

The 4th track laying work in the routes Chennai - Arkonam and Ennore - Thiruvotriyur sections are completed. The goods terminal in Wallajabad has started operating. The expansion work of double platform in Tambaram Railway Station is also completed. All unmanned level crossings except one have been closed in the Chennai railway division.

Earlier, the express trains had recorded the percentage of arrival on the right time at 87.2 percent. Now, this has increased to 89.7 percent. As regards the suburban electric trains, the punctuality of arrival has increased to 90.6 percent.
