With the announcement from the petroleum dealers that the petrol pumps will not be open on Sundays in all the southern states including Tamil Nadu, the vehicle owners/drivers are shocked and anxious.

The petroleum dealers federation has decided to close the petrol bunks on Sundays. It is gathered that all the petrol dealers from the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have given their concurrence to this proposal.

The Indian petroleum dealers federation has declared that the petrol bunks will not be on Sundays from 14th May as a mark of the protest to meet the demands:

The commission amount to the dealers must be increased. The recent request by the Prime Minister to reduce consumption of petrol.

The vehicle drivers are severely upset about this - they are anxious that their lifeline will be greatly disturbed if this happens.

There are over 5000 petrol pumps throughout the country. Out of this. there are over 22000 petrol pumps operated under the Indian petroleum dealers federation. However, All India petroleum dealers association has not supported the proposal to close the petrol pumps on Sundays. They have observed that this proposal may be effective in a few states. But, it may not be country-wide.

In the meanwhile, there are expectations that this proposal may not come through giving the due consideration to the severe hardships to be faced by the public in case it is implemented.
