Fish price up by 30 percent in Chennai

In order to enhance increased quantity of fish for them to multiply, the activity of fishing was banned every year from 15th April until 29th May (45 days).

Accordingly, the banned period for the year 2017 commenced from midnight 12.00 on 15th April.

Subsequently, 30000 fishing boats throughout Tamil Nadu State and 1600 fishing boats in Chennai Kasimedu fishing port are stationed on the coast. The fishermen take the fibre-boats for a short distance to catch fish.

As a follow-up, the arrival of fish for sales has come down. This has led to the increase in fish price up by 30 percent.

The fish variety vanjiram was sold at Rs. 600 per kg, Today, it was sold at Rs. 950 per kg. The variety of vaval fish was sold at Rs. 400 per kg. Today, this was sold at Rs. 700 per kg. The large sankara fish which was sold at Rs. 250 per kg, is now sold at Rs. 350 per kg. Large shrimp, which was sold at Rs, 450 per kg, was sold at Rs. 650 per kg, The small shrimp, which was sold at Rs. 300 per kg, was sold at Rs. 550 per kg.

It is worth noting that there is no ban on fishing in the states of Andhra and Kerala. However, this fish caught there are not allowed to be sold at Kasimedu fishing port.

They are sold at Chintadripet, Puzhal kavangarai, and Maduravoyal. The retail sellers buy this stock from other states in these place and sell them.
