Earlier, the Chennai High Court had ordered that the local elections must be completed before 14th May. The Election Commission had responded explaining the lack of sufficient time and asked for extension of time. The Judges were not pleased about this and warned that the Election Commission might face a case of dishonouring the High Court.
In the enquiry conducted today (Tuesday, 18th April), the Election Commission again presented its case explaining that there were difficulties to organise local elections before end July.
As the major activity of the the preparation of the ward-wise lists of voters based on the voters list released by the Election Commission during January is still in progress. So, more time would be required to conduct local election.
The advocate representing the DMK party informed that there are no objections to conduct the election before end July. However, he requested the state election commissioner to give the written assurance that this would be done.
The judges ordered that the written assurance must be given by the state election commissioner that the local elections will be conducted before end July and also to file the petition regarding the quota of seats for which the state government should extend all help required.
