Heatwave Continues To Grip Chennai, No Relief Soon

Posted on: 20/Apr/2017 10:38:39 AM
No respite is in offing for Chennai, as it continues to swelter under hot and humid weather. For the last couple of days, maximum temperatures over the state capital have been settling in the range of 36°C-38°C, above the normal average.

According to weathermen, such high temperatures amount to heatwave like conditions for any coastal city. High levels of humidity combined with high day temperatures make the feel-like factor much more than the actual temperature.

On Wednesday also, day maximum is likely to settle around 37°C or 38°C. The reason behind the soaring mercury can be attributed to the prolonged dry spell.

There has been no formation of a significant weather systems over around the region that could give any weather activity over the city. In absence of this, warm and humid southeasterly winds have been blowing over Chennai, leading to increase in mercury.

Further, similar weather conditions are likely to continue for few more days as we do not foresee any weather system coming up. Though some respite is on cards during the weekend but it will be a marginal and short-lived only.

Chennai has remained practically dry in the April, so far. The normal average rainfall for the city stands at 14.4 mm of rain.
