As a move to reduce road accidents, in collaboration with Harita Seating Systems Limited, IIT Madras has created Intelliseat. This is a device for monitoring the driver throughout the day, 24 x 7. If he is observed fatigue, the device will warn.

Speaking about this, Venkatesh Balasubramanian from the department of engineering design said this device will be of help in taking immediate action and make use of the information to set benchmarks for drivers and train them. In south India, Intelliseat is road tested.

This can be used for getting in-vehicle information of status and also aid in central tracking by owners. There are plans for the HSSL and IIT Madras to take this to the state transport corporations for fixing devices in their vehicles.

There is unconscionably high rate of traffic accidents in India. We believe, technology can largely help in reducing accidents, said director of IIT Madras, Bhaskar Ramamurthi.
