CMWSSB (Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board) has informed that there are prospects of converting the Porur lake water to potable water and distributing the same by the 3rd week of June.
In the prevailing extreme drought conditions, all the 4 major drinking water reservoirs for Chennai have gone completely dry.
So, CMWSSB has been on the lookout for all other water resources. Accordingly, a study has been undertaken to explore the possibility of using Porur lake water for this purpose. Activities have been initiated.
When enquiring about the present status of this task, a CMWSSB official explained that after testing whether the Porur lake water is potable, it has been confirmed that Porur lake water is potable. Subsequently, contracts were floated and received for purifying the Porur lake water and distributing.
The period for tender submission is over and the contractor has been selected. A target has been set to distribute Porur lake water the Chennai Metro residents by the 3rd week of June and activities are progressing accordingly. The equipment is procured from the state of Gujarat.
There is a plan to supply 4 million litres of drinking water daily from Porur lake.
