The cynosure for people around in the neighborhood is now the post offices dotting the city. People are thronging in at these post offices to open new accounts.
The compulsory minimum balance to be maintained in nationalized banks such as the State Bank of India is whopping Rs 5,000. Irked by this, people are looking for alternative ideas - thanks to post offices for meeting their needs. Here, customers can have minimum balance maintained as low as Rs 50 and there no penalty in case of violating the norms at times.
According to India Post sources, since March 2017, the total accounts maintained with the post offices have seen threefold increase. Its not just the prime branches of Ashok Nagar, T.Nagar and Anna Salai, but also the post offices in suburbs that were likely to shut down operations due to no floating visitors. All these are now busy with too many customers. As people are walking in to open new accounts, we are motivated to introduce more offers and schemes that will improve customer satisfaction, said a senior official with the office of Chief Post Master General of Tamil Nadu.
