Madurai city wears an ultra-festive look with the famous Chithirai festival, celebrating the divine marriage occasion of Lord Sundareswarar with Goddess Meenakshi. As per the mythological folklore, Lord Vishnu (As Lord Kallazhagar) arrives for the wedding ceremony, with thousands of devotees chanting the slogan ‘Govinda Govinda’, to give his sister Goddess Meenakshi (Goddess Parvathi) in marriage to Lord Sundareswarar (Lord Siva).
Today (Wednesday, 10th May) is the most important event of the festival, when Lord Kallazhagar leaves his abode (Kallazhagar temple in Azhagar kovil), enters the Vaigai river, adorned with Kandangi silk and with a Nerikkambu (rod) in His hand, riding on the carriage of a golden palanquin, proceeds to Madurai entering the river Vaigai, to perform the divine marriage.
Thirumanjanam was performed yesterday night (Tuesday, 9th May) at the Thallakulam Prasanna Venkatesar Temple.
Lord Kallazhagar starts his journey wearing the garland given with devotion by his consort Andal, rode on the special carriage of the golden horse, arrives and is placed on the seating platforms made of Vetiver (Citronella) 1000 gold chapparams (Kind of portable car or stage for taking idols in processions) in front of Thallakulam Karuppanasamy’s abode.
Then, Lord Kallazhagar moved, crossing each mandagappadi. With thousands of devotees chanting the Lord Name Govinda Govinda, adorned with green silk clothing, riding on the carriage of golden horse, Lord Kallazhagar entered the Vaigai river, Lord Kallazhagar was welcomed and received by the Lord Veeraraghava Perumal.
