On Sunday, the much awaited underground line of Chennai Metro Rail is set to get opened for public usage. With this inauguration, Chennai will get added to the list of 3 cities offering such facilities in the country: Kolkata, Delhi and Bengaluru. The underground line covers 8km distance along Nehru Park to Koyambedu, connecting the lines that are already functional at the latter.

Yes, on 14th May, the underground line of Chennai metro is set to get launched. The inspections, trial runs and final touches are all given to these stations, affirms an official. The commissioner of metro rail safety inspected the space for 3 days and gave approval for commercial operations a month ago.

On Tuesday, the Tamil Nadu minster for industries, steel control, mines and minerals and special initiatives, Mr. C. Sampath went on for an inspection of the line between Thirumangalam and Nehru Park, its progress and safety measures and facilities incorporated.

The centre and state have together funded for the first stretch of phase-1. Top officials from the ministry of urban development and state transport department and other senior officials are likely to address the event.

About 18m of underground line along the Poonamallee High Road is included in the stretch. Just with a single ticket, now, commuters can easily commute between Nehru Park and Airport in one direction, and in the other direction, to Little Mount within just 60 minutes using a single ticket, notably. At the elevated transit hub at Alandur, commuters however need to switch corridors.

Between Koyambedu and Shenoy Nagar, these trains will travel through either tunnels. Without crossover, the trains cannot change track and hence, just one tunnel will be functional in trains that function up and down connecting Shenoy Nagar and Nehru Park.

Crossover construction is on the go at Shenoy Nagar and Central metro stations. As per plans, the other tunnel lying between Nehru Park and Shenoy Nagar will get opened by end of this year.

There is going to be 4 entry or exit points along with elevators and escalators on both the sides of the roads to provide hassle-free experience to passengers.

It was in June 2015 that the very first line of metro of 11km stretch connecting Koyambedu and Alandur got launched. Later, in September 2016, the second line between Little Mount and Airport got launched.
