Transport employees strike starts

The 4 stages of discussions between the representatives of the Tamil Nadu Transport Corporations Employees Unions and the state administration regarding the 7 demands, including the implementation of renewed 13th wages agreement for the 1.43 Lakh employees working in all the State Transport Corporations and the fund allotment of Rs. 1700 Crores arrears payment for the retired employees and the regular monthly pension payment ended in a failure.

Subsequent to this failure of discussions, the strike by the unions of transport corporation employees started. Actually, the strike commenced 1 day in advance of the date announced earlier.

From today (Monday, 15th May) morning, a lesser number of buses are being operated in Chennai Metro City. There are two maintenance workshops (depots) in Tambaram, Chennai. Out of these 2 depots, 152 city buses are being operated every day from one depot.

However, today morning, only 30 percent buses are being operated. Out of the 51 uses scheduled to operate daily from the government transport depot, only 20 percent are being operated.

159 buses are to be operated from Chromepet. 136 buses are to be operated from Alandur. 55 buses are to be operated from Adambakkam. 53 buses are to be operated from Chengalpattu. However, out of this total buses, only 20 percent are being operated.

The city suburban areas such as Chromepet, Pallavaram, and Tambaram are not affected by a great margin due to the transport employees strike as most of the residents commute by train.

However, the bus services in the sections Velachery-Pallikkaranai and East Tambaram-Camp Road are totally affected. The residents of these areas could not even get to the nearest railway station.

A lesser number of buses are being operated from the depots at Koyambedu and Saidapet.

Even lesser number of buses are operated from the Koyambedu bus terminus to the Southern districts and Northern districts.
