Around 10 lakhs packaged drinking water cans are sold daily in Chennai Metro from the 350 packaged drinking water suppliers located in the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, and Kanchipuram.
Protesting against the imposition of GST of 18% on the packaged drinking water and the orders of the officials to close the packaged drinking water suppliers citing the reason of the acute fall in the groundwater level, the packaged drinking water suppliers went on a strike from Sunday (28th May). As 250 suppliers participated in the strike, an acute shortage for packaged drinking water was felt in the city.
There were some complaints that the packaged drinking water cans were being sold at higher prices.
In this situation, the packaged drinking water suppliers association representatives had a discussion with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, E. Palanisamy.
As the Chief Minister promised to look into the demands, the packaged drinking water suppliers informed that they are withdrawing the strike.
