The state president of the nurses association informed that there are strong possibilities of a change in the uniform for the nurses employed in the government hospitals when the recommendations of the 7th wages review committee are implemented by the state government of Tamil Nadu.

He further informed that uniforms for nurses in government hospitals in other states have changed.

The nurses employed in private hospitals wear churidars or saris as uniforms.

However, in the Tamil Nadu government hospitals alone, the uniforms devised during the British era (several decades ago) is still in vogue.

The association has proposed the demand to change it. There was a meeting with the Secretary of the Health Department on 17th May and then with the secretary of the Finance Department on 26th May. Both informed they will initiate action on this. Indian Nursing Council also has approved the proposal to change the uniform.

Accordingly, all Grade 1, 2, and 3 nurses will wear saris. The Association has selected and asked for churidars as the uniform for all the fresh employees and nurses with experience up to 10 years. Currently, the male nurses wear white shirts/pants.

The association has proposed for stars on the shoulder straps (according to their experience) instead of the strap currently used. Thus, there are possibilities of these proposals approved and implemented along with the 7th wages review committee recommendations.
