Universities in Category 1 are likely to enjoy huge incentive, according to the newly termed regulations. A note about the same was announced by the UGC last week. At the same time, for students wanting to enroll in universities under Category 3, there is a major disincentive. They ought to clear the National Eligibility Test or State Level Eligibility Test or any other State Eligibility Test if they want to take up PhD degree.
Universities that fall under Category 3 as per UGC announcement have got National Institute Ranking Framework that are above 100. The score of National Assessment and Accreditation Council is less than 3. As per the new regulation brought by the member of the panel, these institutions should pull up their socks in terms of the quality of education provided.
For students to enroll for PhD studies in Tamil Nadu, the eligibility criteria is that they should have completed undergraduate and Masters degree with 55 percent and above aggregate score. Note that for teaching jobs in the state, PhD is a pre-requisite together with other tests. Students from Tamil Nadu however feel that these eligibility tests are tough and they find it hard to be qualified for teaching posts.
