The officials from the transport department have informed that battery operated buses will start running in the Chennai Metro in 6 months. This will reduce the fuel expenses by 50%.

Different types of buses are being run by MTC in Chennai Metro city, ordinary, deluxe, and air-conditioned. The Department of Transport of the state government of Tamil Nadu has planned to run battery operated buses in the city in order to reduce the fuel expenses.

A test-run was conducted on the Ashok-Leyland manufactured battery operated bus yesterday (Monday, 12th June).

The officials explained that the test-run was conducted on the battery operated buses which are made operating in hilly regions. There are 31 deluxe seats, 2 CCTV cameras, fire-fighting equipment, GPS, automatic-operating doors, emergency exit, first-aid box, a computer screen to assist the driver on the route, etc., are available on the bus. The test-run was highly satisfactory.

However, discussions will be conducted with the manufacturer regarding some minor changes such as modifying the seats to withstand operations in the city, etc.

By running battery operated buses, pollution will be prevented as well as savings in fuel expenses.

However, the battery operated buses cost more than the diesel-operated buses. It is expected that battery operated buses will run in Chennai soon.
