Pictorial books may limit learning in children, research

According to a recent research, books containing too many pictures in it can largely limit word learning in children.

In general, publishers look for introducing colorful and pictorial texts to entice buyers. Psychologists from the University of Sussex say that pre-schoolers tend to poorly learn with books that carry more than one illustration in a page.

The findings of the study are helpful for parents and nursery teachers in a few pre-school educational challenges they face. This helps in improving their potential to learn materials for children.

Children, in general, love listening to stories. Adults also love reading those to them. When it comes to too young children, they will not know to follow the text, and hence they do not know which picture to follow. This has a huge impact on their way of learning words out of stories.

The researchers read out storybooks meant for 3-year old children carrying one illustration at a time. The book contained illustrations on the right hand side and the left side was kept plain. And they also tried reading books with two illustrations where both the pages contained illustrations. These introduced new objects to them.

Parents should guide the children about where to focus on the book. This will help them in improving their focus on following texts.
