It rained quite heavily in Chennai day-before-yesterday (11th July) throughout the night. The Chennai Meteorological Centre has informed that there are good prospects of rain in a few places for the next 2 days in a few parts of the northern Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu experienced a rather severe summer over the last 3 months. The onset of the south-west monsoon season brought some relief from the oppressive heat. It has been raining heavily along with forceful winds in several parts of Tamil Nadu after the onset of the south-west.
It has been raining quite heavily in the Chennai Metro City as well. The rain which started on the 11th night was persistently heavy and continued till the next early morning. The roads were flooded. The vehicle drivers had to face hardship driving on these roads.
An official from the Chennai Meteorological Centre explained that due to the appreciable speed changes in the winds blowing from the west, and also the recent formation of a thermal convection, groups of clouds formed in different parts of the state in Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur among the northern districts. Later, these cloud groups merged together and moved in the eastern direction.
As the highly humid coastal air combined with the merged cloud gathering, there has been heavy rains with lightning and thunder in the northern districts of the state.
Due to the thermal convection effect recently formed, there are prospects of rain in a few places in both the northern and southern sections of Tamil Nadu.
Chennai will remain cloudy. There might be rains with lightning and thunder in the evening or night.
