This year (2017), as per the Tamil Calendar month, Aadi, there are 2 ‘krithigai’s (One of the 27 stars as per the Hindu Almanac) falling in this month (as there are 27 stars, the general trend is only one occasion for each start in the 30/31 day month).  So, the devotees of Lord Muruga are excited and exhilarated that there would be 2 occasions within a month to have prayers and Darshan of their favourite Lord Muruga.

The 2 Krithigais in this Tamil calendar month of Aadi are falling on 3rd (19th July) and 30th (15th August). Hence, the devotees of Muruga, who carry ‘Kavadis’ are doubly delighted.

Generally, the occasion of Krithigai festival will be celebrated in the Lord Muruga temple only once in a month. As this is a rare occasion of 2 Krtihigais in a single month, plans are afoot to celebrate in a grand manner.

As a general tradition, the devotees of Lord Muruga carry Kavadis of Milk, Flowers, Peacock feathers, etc., The devotees carry Kavadis not only on the Krithigai day but throughout this Tamil calendar month of Aadi.

Though there are temples of Lord Muruga all over the world, there are 6 sacred temples which are considered supreme among all the temples of Lord Muruga – the temples in Thiruparankundram, Thiruchendur, Swamimalai, Palani, Thiruthani, and Pazhamudhirsolai are known as ‘Arupadaiveedugal’.

Aadi Krithigai is celebrated in a grand manner in all temples of Lord Muruga.

As the 2nd Krithigai star in the Tamil calendar month of Aadi falls on 15th August, which is a National Holiday being Independence Day, it is expected that there will be a ultra-huge gathering of Lord Muruga devotees in all the 6 special temples mentioned above.
