As there prevails acute water shortage in Chennai city, the Chennai Metro Rail has come forward with its initiative. It has adopted the new mechanism with which it is possible to save 2000 litres of water in a day.

Officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited said the air conditioners shed out condensed water. This can be used for several purposes.

To start with, the process is implemented at the administrative building of CMRL in Koyambedu. Following this, the plan will be implemented in stations between the stretch of Thirumangalam and Nehru Park.

About 40,000 litres of water gets used at the administrative building in a day, say sources. In the elevated corridor and underground corridor, about 25,000 and 15,000 litres of water gets used.

Water will be subjected to purification process and this purified form of it will be used for toilet cleaning, washing of trains or watering plants, said CMRL.

About 90 percent of water needed for the Chennai Metro Rail is sourced from the Chennai Metro water. The remaining is sourced from private suppliers.

An official says they are instructed to be very cautious about consuming water and reduce it as much as possible.

It is to be noted that the Delhi Metro has got effluent and sewage treatment plants to help in reuse of 140 kilolitres of water daily.
