Water tankers to be tracked real time

As people rely on water tankers more in the past few months, the Chennai Metro Water has got plans to set up a GPS-based automatic lorry tracking system aimed at curbing unauthorized trips by tankers.

It is likely that the water agency will hire system integrator services. The latter will have to set up and install GPS devices and function the system. It should also develop a web-based application software valid for 2 years. This will keep track of tankers. In the past, there were a lot of attempts to fix GPS equipment in the tankers. Nevertheless, the projects failed because of unaccountability and improper data usage to track tankers.

On a daily basis, there are over 7,800 trips made by 760 tankers. These function for the water agencies in contract basis.

The daily supply given to the city is 470 million litres of metro water. Out of this, tankers supply over 60 mld of water.

To start with, 520 GPS systems are needed for fixing in tankers for monitoring their movements, locations at which they stop and the deviations in between, if any.
