In Chennai, metro rail commuters will soon be able to walk to any station and board in train without wanting to swipe their smart card or wait in queue in the ticket counters for buying tokens.
It is likely that the Chennai metro rail will launch contactless smart cards with which users will be able to simply pass by the scanner gates just with a tiny clip or card containing a chip. With this, their ticket price will get deducted.
These cards will eventually be implemented in all the other modes of transport too. For this, the Chennai metro rail limited has invited tenders for designing and manufacturing and supplying these contactless smart cards.
This system is similar to the small chip present in your car which can cross a tool booth. The money for passing by will get automatically deducted. An official says, this system using contactless smart card is in use in metro rail facilities.
To note, smart card facility is already mandated in the underground stretch between Nehru Park and Thirumangalam. In spite of reducing the travel time of commuters at the ticket counters, commuters will have to deduct the ticket price still.
