Since last one week, Chennai has been receiving on and off rains. However, the intensity of these showers has increased during the last three days. The reason for this upsurge can be attributed to a trough which was persisting along the coast of Tamil Nadu.
In wake of this system, the moisture levels have increased leading to the formation of thunderclouds.
In a span of last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Meenabakkam observatory recorded 16 mm of rains, while Nungambakkam observatory received a mere of 9 mm rains.
As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation is formed over South Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Tamil Nadu Coast. Due to this, we expect light to moderate showers to continue over Chennai and adjoining parts for the next four to five days.
Although these rains will not be continuous but will appear mostly during afternoon and evenings. The weather will remain sultry however the sky will remain partly cloudy to cloudy. Morning and nights will be comparatively comfortable.
Generally, Chennai does not see any major rain activity throughout the Southwest Monsoon as it lies in the rain shadow area.
Till August 13, Chennai has recorded 74.7 mm of rainfall as against its monthly average of 126.8 mm.
