There is going to be at least 90 minutes lesser travel time in train between Chennai and Madurai. Starting from December month, the southern railways will increase the speed of trains and function more of trains, as works along the 497-km stretch will be set to get completed, says an announcement by the general manager Vashishta Johri, during his speech on Independence Day.
The Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd is handling a part of the project. This is an engineering arm of the national transporter. It has extended the Chennai to Trichy stretch and electrified it by May. Along the Trichy to Dindugal section, close to 20 km doubling and patchwork continued and this could get over before December, according to sources.
The doubling work along Dindugal to Madurai is done and the Union cabinet had cleared the proposal for doubling along Madurai to Kanyakumari stretch.
In the new lines towards Madurai, the train speed will increase up to 100kmph upon commissioning. This will reduce the total travel time by 20 percent, said sources from the department. So, in Pandian express, the travel time which is at present 9 hours between the two cities shall come down by a minimum of 1.5 hours.
